Key takeaways

  • It takes up to 4TB of storage.
  • You do have to deal with some tiny fasteners, as it's a compact SSD.

Do you need more storage for your iPhone, MacBook, or pretty much any device with a USB-C port? Do you need something faster than a flash drive? A portable SSD enclosure is the way to go.

While most SSD enclosures are rather chunky, accessory maker Sharge has come out with what it claims is theworld's thinnest one -- and at less than a quarter of an inch thick, the Disk Plus is a sleek, stylish way to add extra storage to any device.

The Disk Plus is CNC machined from aluminum alloy and has the thickness of three coins and the size of a credit card holder -- it measures 93 x 60 x 6mm/3.66 x 2.36 x 0.24 inches.

But don't let the small size fool you-this enclosure packs a punch. It supports M.2 NVMe drives up to 4TB in a range of form factors -- 2280, 2242, and 2230 -- and speeds up to 10Gbps. That's enough to move a 4K movie in 20 seconds.

M.2 drives generate quite a bit of heat in use, but the enclosure does an excellent job of dissipating it from what I've seen. But there's more.

The enclosure has a built-in holder for a thin ribbon USB-C cable, and there are two USB-C ports on the enclosure. Why two? Because it supports up to 100W power pass-through, so you can connect a power supply to one of the ports, and the device -- MacBook, iPhone 15/16, Steam Deck, iPad, Google Pixel, or pretty much anything that has a USB-C port -- to the other, and that can get both data and power!

The cable holder is neat, and keeps it in place until it's needed.

The enclosure is powered by a Realtek RTL9210 chip that offers a broad range of multi-layer protections, including short-circuit and over-current protections.

Adding your own NVMe drive is pretty straightforward, and as long as you're fine dealing with some of the tiniest screws I've seen, you should be able to do it in under a minute.

Open the enclosure, pop in the NVMe drive, screw it in place, close the enclosure, and you're done.

If you do lose a screw or two, the kit comes with some spares. You also get some spare thermal pads, a carry pouch, and a screwdriver.

I tested the Disk Plus using a number of MVMe M.2 drives I had, and I was getting the rated 10Gbps (around 1,250 MB/s) from the enclosure. This is more than enough to handle modern workflows, even moving big video files.

's buying advice

At$30, theSharge Disk Plus is a fantastic enclosure. Sure, the tiny screws really are tiny, but the enclosure is sleek, stylish, and totally portable. The addition of pass-through power is a nice touch and means that devices with a single port don't have to choose between data and power.
